FULL ORGANIZATIONAL MEMBERSHIP is open to any music therapy membership organization or society that has a constitution and bylaws and is registered as a music therapy organization or a creative arts therapy organization where music therapy is a professional branch according to the laws of its respective country. Verifiable proof through documentation translated into English must be presented. Full organizational members have the right to vote.

ASSOCIATE ORGANIZATIONAL MEMBERSHIP is open to any university or music therapy training program or other institution or organization related to or interested in music therapy not meeting the criteria for Full Organizational Membership but that includes the promotion of music therapy among its main objectives. Associate organizational members do not have the right to vote.
INDIVIDUAL PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP is open to any individual who can provide evidence of educational/organizational designation as a music therapist. Documentation in English must accompany the membership application. Individual professional members do not have the right to vote. Individual professional membership does not imply professional certification or professional status.
INDIVIDUAL STUDENT MEMBERSHIP is open to any individual studying to be a music therapist according to their respective country’s guidelines/educational standards or a student interested in music therapy. Proof of student status translated into English must be presented with the membership application. Student members do not have the right to vote.
PATRON MEMBERSHIP is open to individuals, groups, businesses, or organizations that donate funds, services, expertise, networking, etc. to the World Federation of Music Therapy. Patron members do not have the right to vote.
HONORARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP is bestowed on an individual who has made a substantial contribution to the development of music therapy and/or the World Federation of Music Therapy. Honorary members do not have the right to vote. Candidates for an honorary life membership are nominated by members and voted upon by the Council.
