The Argentine Music Therapy Association (ASAM) was born 50 years ago, founded by Music Therapy pioneers in Argentina, who saw from their various trainings (Educational, Musical, Medical) the possibility of opening up to new domains of knowledge which were already being explored in other countries in Europe, Latin, and North America.Since its founding in 1966 to this day, the institution has had many “life cycles” that tried to achieve a solid and independent entity. ASAM joined its members in different phases of development, difficulty, and success. In the beginning, it saw the very first regional events and the creation of the first Music therapy University career in the country, and one of the first in Latin America. With successive graduates who joined ASAM, it enlarged its horizons, exploring the community approaches as well as the clinical practice. ASAM also started its own publication, “ECOS,” and offered a large array of publications in its library, which nowadays has largely exceeded the first intended purpose. It’s still a widely consulted library for music therapy students. In addition to the seminars and workshops it usually hosts, ASAM, to commemorate its 50th anniversary, has organized several talks open to the public with several seasoned speakers who’ve contributed to the construction of Music Therapy in our region and worldwide, such as: Violeta Hemsy de Gainza (Music Pedagogy), Diego Schapira (Abordaje Plurimodal), Marcela Lichtensztejn (N-R), Gabriel Federico, Amelia Ferragina, Montserrat Gimeno (MIR, GIM), Ralf Niedenthal, etc.Information provided by Paula Gómez Carrillo, ArgentinaWFMT Student Delegate for Latin America
