Different Modes and Different Cultures

American music is not very familiar to Koreans. Mode music is especially difficulty for me. I really wanted to know piano improvisation techniques as a music therapist. Therefore, I attended a summer workshop for music therapists in the United States in 1999. I had various musical experiences and learned many skills from excellent music therapists and professors, which broaden my understanding of Western music. Additionally, I was able to experience mode music at a teachers’ workshop at the Gordon Institute, U.S.A. and at conference, I learned about pentatonic scales. The Health Rhythm program by REMO, which I attended last Fall, gave me a rhythmical understanding and energetic moments. I definitely learned the cultural aspects through rhythmical experiences. I also had the chance to attend a Musicians’ Wellness Program, which helped me to relax and to restore from burn out feelings as a music therapist.Hye won Chung, Doctoral Candidate for Music Therapy in Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, Korea
