This is my first blog for the WFMT and I am excited to be in a new role, serving the worldwide community of music therapists and those who benefit from, or have an interest in music therapy. Firstly I’d like to thank my predecessor, Dr. Simon Gilbertson for all his work in developing the links between Europe and the “rest of the world” and particularly in enabling music therapy students to experience different ways of working.

By way of introduction, my first career was playing viola with the Hallé Orchestra, giving me the opportunity to travel extensively. I qualified as a music therapist in 1995 and now manage a small charity in rural Northern England, working mainly with children and engaging the community by playing, lecturing, writing and giving presentations. Donald Wetherick recently succeeded me as Chair of the British Association for Music Therapy, a voluntary position I held for several years during which I guided our professional organisation though a period of change.

My role with WFMT is to act as Regional Liaison for Europe and it is a great bonus for me that the European Music Therapy Confederation has so much information publicly available (www.emtc-eu.com), and that the Council is keen to work with us to share good practice and exchange of information. I was also pleased to visit Seoul in October (see the blog of our Regional Liaison for Western Pacific) and to hear how practices in Europe fit into the world context. Particularly in these hard economic times it is so important that we encourage one another and rejoice in success!

There are two important dates upcoming – both great opportunities for us to showcase our work, meet up with colleagues and learn from one another in amazingly beautiful venues in Europe.

  1. 1.The 9th European Music Therapy Congress, “Setting the Tone: Cultures of Relating and Reflecting in Music Therapy” is to be held in Oslo, Norway from 7th – 10th August 2013. Deadline for abstract submissions is 15th February 2013. http://www.musikkterapi.no/emtc2013
  1. 2.The 14th World Congress of Music Therapy, “Cultural Diversity in Music Therapy Practice, Research and Education” is to be held in Vienna/Krems, Austria from 6th – 12th July 2014. Watch out for the call for posters and presentations! http://www.musictherapy2014.org/

If you can find a way to get to Europe for these events, I encourage you to – the investment will reap great rewards! Why not be creative and seek out funding sources to support you in this venture….
