Inauguration of MT Program in Brazil

After the implementation of the first educational program in music therapy in Brazil at the Conservatório Brasileiro de Música, Rio de Janeiro, in the 70’s, we have this year a great achievement to commemorate: A major university of Latin America (continent rank 9, world rank 356), the Federal University of Minas Gerais, (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte-Brazil, inaugurates its Bachelor Program in Music Therapy in March 2009. We finally see this happen thanks to all faculty members of UFMG and music therapy colleagues, especially Cecília Conde, Director of the Conservatório Brasileiro de Música, Rio de Janeiro and Kate Gfeller from the University of Iowa, USA, who supported the development of the program since the beginning of a long journey, started in early 90’s. UFMG will have the honor of hosting WFMT President Dr. Petra Kern as a guest speaker for the Inauguration Ceremony, on March 17th 2009, 9:00 AM, at the School of Music of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte (http://www.musica.ufmg.br/). She will talk about Global Trends and Challenges of Clinical Practice, Research, and Education in Music Therapy. The event will be open to general public and local music therapists are most welcome to participate.
