Hello, my name is Aksana Kavaliova-Moussi, and I am very excited to represent Eastern Mediterranean region and continue spreading the awareness about music therapy among people here! At the moment there are just four certified music therapists in this part of the world, and we are trying to stay in touch with each other as often as possible. Music therapists work in Bahrain, Dubai (UAE), Doha (Qatar), and Lebanon; we provide music therapy to children and young adults with special needs in school settings and privately. There were two music therapists in Jordan who worked with people with Developmental Disabilities, with Iraqi refugees and women-victims of violence, but unfortunately both of them left the country.

My colleague from Qatar shared some promising news: “Qatar Music Academy has invited Barbara Aeberhart, PhD, Jackie Robarts, PhD, and Petra Kern, PhD, to each send a proposal regarding the development of a training program in music therapy in Doha. Dr. Aeberhart gave a week long workshop here this Fall at QMA. The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness of the benefits of music therapy among these professionals. It was attended by approximately thirty rehabilitative professionals from Hamad Hospital, Al-Noor Institute (for the Visually Impaired) and The Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs.”

February 18 was the day of the 2nd Online Conference for Music Therapy. I joined the Organizing Committee in 2010, and the 1st Conference Keynote speakers were the WFMT Past President Dr. Petra Kern and Dr. Anita Gadberry, our current North American Liaison. Anita has joined the Committee, and this year’s conference had more attendees from different parts of the world and a very interesting program. One of the Keynote speeches was given by Dr. Lucanne Magill, the WFMT Commissioner on Education and Training.

In Dubai, the 4th Princess Haya Award for Special Education is in its final stage, with one of our colleagues being short-listed in the music therapist/music teacher category. The date of the Gala dinner is not announced yet, but we are hopeful this year will be as successful as the last one, when Marion Tennant (former Ritchie) from Dubai won the “Outstanding Music Therapist” award.
