Music therapy in Southeast Asia is emerging. Although it does not exist yet as a profession in most of the countries, except for India, Thailand and Indonesia. Strong efforts are made in these countries to introduce professional music therapy training and clinical programs. Establishment of academic curriculum and governmental accreditation are challenging. Music as part of healing practices still includes a strong belief system across many cultures in this region.
Music therapy in India is multidisciplinary in nature taking its theoretical foundations from Vedic traditions, different alternative treatment approaches like Yoga and Ayurveda and other music healing traditions like nadopasana and nadayoga and the guidelines formulated by ragachikitsa. Traditions undergo changes while integrating them in modern clinical practice through clinical reasoning, judgment and action in the process of evidence based music therapy.
Indian music therapy is restructuring of diverse healing traditions by integrating science, theory and clinical knowledge. Through a structured approach, practice includes eclectic concepts, Indian theories and models with a basic framework to bring harmony between the mind, body and the soul and also enhance quality of life.
In this short documentary, I am guiding you through the traditions to clinical practice of music therapy in India.
