I have recently had the amazing opportunity to take part in the 2014 World Congress of Music Therapy in Austria. The Congress took place in two different locations: the first part in the metropolis of Vienna and the second in thepicturesque town of Krems. The various locations offered the participants a true experience of the Austrian nation’s unique diversity. The pre-congress student session was composed of music therapy professionals and students discussing the challenges and benefits related to the practice of global music therapy.During the Congress, a poster presentation and a spotlight session on Traditions and Cultural Diversity highlighted the importance of cultural sensitivity in the work of a music therapist. A second spotlight session explored clinical practice in music therapy. Clinicians from all around the world shared clinical cases, experiences, and recommendations. These all offered insight on the culture-bound and universal aspects of music therapy practice. A student led poster presentation offered an overview of student initiatives from all around the world and the work of student associations. I then attended paper presentations on a music therapy initiative in Lebanon working with Palestinian refugees and Culture-Centered Music Therapy in India and Australia.Throughout the experience, I found that the impromptu musical moments, where all the music therapists shared songs of their nations, were really special. Seeing participants engaging in active music-making, whether or not it was in a known language, exemplified the power music has as a social and universal communication agent. Outstanding cultural programs were offered during the Congress and contributed to the theme of the conference. Being able to experience the history, scenery, and uniqueness of the Austrian culture also inspired me to reflect on my own culture and its impact on my world views. The tale of my experience would not be complete if I did not mention the precious friendships that were founded as a result of the Congress. I will do all in my capacity to attend the next World Congress in Japan, and I am grateful for the WFMT scholarship, which allowed me to have one of the most privileged experiences in my life.Annabelle BraultWFMT Student Delegate for North America, Student at University of Windsor, Toronto, Canada2014 WCMT Student Scholarship Recipient
