WCMT 2017 student Report from Bernadette Cajigal, AU

Thoroughly InspiredMy experience at the 15th World Congress of Music Therapy (WCMT) was so rich and multi-faceted, I find it difficult to put it into words. Through attending presentations, workshops and cultural sessions, and conversing with music therapists and music therapy students from all over the world, I learned about global developments in music therapy, about what music therapy work and education looks like in other countries, and about Japanese culture! Delegates were united in their passion for music therapy, and the cultural differences seemed to add a richness to the event. While learning about developments in music therapy around the world, I was also reminded of issues all music therapists face. I appreciated the opportunity to see my professors and clinical supervisors present their own work, and how they delineate their own professional successes – something I would not normally see in the context of classes and practicums. I especially enjoyed the spotlight session on music therapy and culture, which reminded me of the importance of being attentive to any cultural insensitivities or bias, and of bringing this awareness to professional practice. That said, every session I attended inspired me in a different way – I only wish there was a way to be in more than one place at a time, as it seemed there was always more than one interesting session being run!I am deeply grateful for the privilege of attending the WCMT, afforded me by the World Federation of Music Therapy. As I prepare to graduate at the end of the year, I believe that attending this congress will spur me on to reach that goal and launch my career as a music therapist with enthusiasm! How fitting that the 15th WCMT should be themed “inspiring the next generation”. I, for one, was thoroughly inspired.
