News

August 5, 2026

The World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) is pleased to share the first collection of translations of the revised WFMT Definition of Music Therapy, making this important document accessible to an increasingly diverse global music therapy community.

The revised definition represents a significant milestone for the profession and was developed through the work of the Working Group for Reviewing and Revising the Definition of Music Therapy during the WFMT Council term 2023–2026. The updated definition was announced during the General Business Meeting of the WFMT at the 18th World Congress of Music Therapy in Bologna, Italy, in July 2026.

A collaborative international effort

The translation process reflects the global nature of music therapy and the commitment of our community to making professional resources accessible across languages and cultures.

The available translations are being shared progressively as they become ready. Each version is made possible through the valuable contribution of volunteer translators and reviewers from around the world. The timeline of publication reflects the availability of contributors and the completion of each translation and review process.

We warmly thank all translators and reviewers who have dedicated their time and expertise to this collaborative effort.

Available translations

To support both professional access and wider dissemination, each translation is shared in two formats. The official document version provides the complete translated text of the revised WFMT Definition of Music Therapy, while the social media card offers a visual resource that can be shared to help spread awareness of the definition across the global music therapy community.
